From Shivers to Sweaters: Designing a Small Dog Crochet Sweater Pattern That Works
I designed this small dog crochet sweater pattern for my two Yorkshire Terriers, Jack and Jake.
They’re not teacup Yorkies. They’re regular small-breed dogs weighing about 10 pounds and measuring 15–17 inches in length. If you’re looking for a crochet sweater for small dogs in that size range, this pattern was made with that exact fit in mind.
If you’re not sure how to determine your dog’s size, you can follow this simple guide that shows how to measure your dog for a sweater, including neck girth, chest girth, and back length so you can choose the right size.
A few summers ago, I spent time in rural Idaho with them — wide open land, cool mornings, quiet evenings. It was beautiful. But as summer shifted toward fall, the temperature dropped quickly.
I had packed warm layers.
My dogs had not.
Before owning Yorkies, I didn’t fully understand the need for a dog sweater for small breeds. It felt unnecessary.
Until I watched them shiver.
That was the moment I realized I needed a quick and easy dog sweater I could make without overthinking sizing, shaping, or complicated construction.
Now, no matter the season, their sweaters are packed first.
We travel back to Idaho every year, sometimes more than once. Most trips are in the spring and summer when the grass is green and the fields are alive with color. But every so often, we find ourselves there in crisp autumn air or quiet winter snow.
And I never forget their sweaters.
They look especially dashing in them — warm, cozy, and completely at ease.
That’s exactly why I designed this beginner-friendly dog sweater pattern. I wanted an easy crochet dog sweater that worked up quickly, fit small dogs comfortably, and didn’t require advanced garment skills.
If you’re looking for a quick and easy dog sweater that actually works for real small-breed dogs, this pattern was made with that exact purpose in mind.
Materials
To make this Quick & Easy Small Dog Sweater, you will need:
Recommended Yarn:
- Crochet Hook: Size J/10 (6.0 mm)
- Yarn: Lion Brand Amazing – Strawberry Fields
(53% Wool, 47% Acrylic)
#4 Medium / Worsted Weight
1 skein (147 yd / 135 m, 50 g)
Yarn Alternatives (Worsted Weight #4):
This pattern uses a #4 medium worsted-weight yarn for warmth and structure while still keeping the sweater flexible for small breeds.
Any soft, washable worsted weight yarn will work beautifully for this small dog crochet sweater. Look for yarns with good drape and mild stretch.
Acrylic Options (Easy Care)
- Red Heart Soft
- Lion Brand Heartland
- Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn
- Paintbox Simply Aran
Wool Blend Options (Warmer)
- Lion Brand Wool-Ease
- Knit Picks Brava Worsted
- Cascade 220 Superwash
You can substitute any #4 medium worsted weight yarn that matches gauge.
Optional additions you may want to include:
Yardage Requirements
One of the best things about this quick and easy small dog crochet sweater is that it uses a modest amount of yarn while still creating a warm, cozy finished piece.
For the small size shown in this pattern, you will need:
- Approximately 140–156 yards (128–143 m) total
The sample sweater was made using Lion Brand Amazing (147 yards per skein). Depending on your tension, you may use most of one skein and a small amount from a second skein.
Because yardage can vary slightly based on gauge, tension, and any length adjustments, it’s always wise to have a little extra yarn on hand.
If you plan to lengthen the sweater for a longer-backed dog, additional yardage will be required.

Gauge / Tension for the Small Dog Sweater
Gauge is important for this project, as it directly affects the finished size and fit of the sweater.
13 stitches and 4 rows = 4 inches in double crochet using a J/10 (6.0 mm) crochet hook
To check your gauge:
- Work a small swatch in double crochet.
- Measure 4 inches across and 4 inches down.
- Adjust your hook size if needed to match gauge.
If your stitches are too tight, your sweater will turn out smaller.
If your stitches are too loose, the finished sweater may be too large.
Taking a few minutes to check gauge will help ensure the best possible fit for your dog.
Because this pattern is written for small dogs, matching gauge is especially important to maintain the intended proportions.
Abbreviations
Pattern is written in Standard US crochet terms.

Special Stitches and Techniques:
Back Post Only (BPO) – Work the stitch around the post of the stitch from the previous row instead of under the top two loops. This creates texture and stretch, ideal for ribbing and structure in the sweater.
Single crochet 2 together (Sc2tog) – Insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop. Insert hook into the following stitch, pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook to decrease by one stitch.
Pattern Instructions – Quick & Easy Small Dog Sweater
Follow the step-by-step instructions below to crochet your own Quick & Easy Small Dog Sweater.
This pattern works up quickly, is beginner-friendly, and creates a cozy, stylish sweater designed specifically for small dogs. If you’re comfortable with basic stitches like double crochet and simple shaping, you’ll find this project straightforward and rewarding.
Dog Sweater Construction
This small dog crochet sweater is worked in simple sections and then assembled for a clean, comfortable fit.
The sweater begins with the main body panel, worked in rows to create the back portion. Shaping is added to form the neckline and ensure a proper fit along your dog’s back.
Next, the chest panel is worked and shaped to fit comfortably under the belly. The two sections are then seamed together, leaving openings for the legs.
This pattern is ideal for beginners who want to practice basic garment construction on a small, manageable project.

The ad-free printable PDF includes detailed construction photos and a clean, easy-to-print layout. It’s perfect if you prefer to work offline or want a visual reference while crocheting.
Finished Dimensions
Using the recommended yarn and hook size, the finished sweater measures approximately:
Chest girth: 15.5″
Neck Girth: 9.5″
Back Length: 9.5″ from neck to end
Chest Length: 6″ from neck to belly
Because tension can vary from crocheter to crocheter, all measurements are approximate and taken flat.
Choosing the Right Size
Every dog has slightly different proportions, so the best way to choose a size is to measure your dog before starting and compare those measurements to the finished dimensions listed above.
If you’re not sure how to take these measurements, follow this step-by-step guide:

Collar
The collar is worked first and forms the foundation of your sweater. It is created as a simple rectangle, then folded and seamed to form a soft, stretchy neckline.
Start at the neckline and work back and forth in rows.
Follow the row instructions as written to create your collar panel.
When complete:
- Do not bind off.
- Fold the collar in half lengthwise, aligning edges.
- Single crochet (sc) through both layers across the bottom edge to seal the collar.
- Continue directly into the body of the sweater as instructed.
This folded construction creates a thicker, more structured neckline while maintaining stretch and comfort.
Visual Learner?
The ad-free PDF includes detailed, step-by-step photos of the collar construction and fold-and-seam process, along with full assembly guidance.
You can find it in:
Back Panel

Collar Finish
Do not fasten off.
Fold the collar in half lengthwise. Working through both layers, single crochet evenly across the bottom edge to join and seal the collar.
Before continuing, you can also adjust the neckline fit if needed. This guide explains how to customize neck openings in crochet dog sweaters for a tighter, looser, or more comfortable fit.
Do not fasten off. Continue directly to Row 4.
Row 4:
Ch 2, turn. DC in each stitch across. [30 sts]
Rows 5–18:
Repeat Row 4. [30 sts]
This is the section where the back length of the sweater can be adjusted for a shorter or longer dog. If you need to make the sweater longer or shorter, check out my guide on how to adjust the back length of a crochet dog sweater for step-by-step instructions.
Shaping the Back
Row 19:
Ch 2, turn. SC2tog over first 2 sts, DC across to last 2 sts, SC2tog over last 2 sts. [28 sts]

Row 20:
Repeat Row 19. [26 sts]
Row 21:
Ch 2, turn. DC in next 12 sts, SC2tog, DC in last 12 sts. [24 sts]

Chest Panel

Chain 18
Row 1:
DC in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. [17 sts]
Rows 2–5:

Shaping the Chest
Rows 6–13:
Ch 2, turn. SC2tog over first 2 sts, DC across to last 2 sts, SC2tog over last 2 sts.
You will decrease by 2 stitches in each of these rows (one at each end).
Row 14:
If 2 stitches remain, SC2tog to close.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
The finished chest piece forms a tapered triangle that fits comfortably along the belly and chest.

Assembly
Need visual guidance? The ad-free PDF includes a detailed, step-by-step photo tutorial for assembly , and it’s available in my shop and inside The Crochet Conservatory.
Step-by-Step Assembly
Step 1 – Position the Chest Piece
With right sides together, center the chest piece between the two back edges.
The pointed tip of the chest piece should sit at the base of the neckline.
This positioning naturally creates a slight opening at the neck.
Step 2 – Seam the Neckline
Use slip stitch (slp st) to seam the small neckline opening closed.
Step 3 – Seam the Chest Piece
Continue using slip stitch (slp st) to seam the chest piece to the back piece.
Step 4 – Leave Leg Openings
Leave approximately 2 inches open on each side for the legs.
Fit Tip
On my dogs, the leg openings began about 5–6 inches down from the neckline.
However, every dog is shaped differently.
Before fully seaming, hold the sweater up to your dog to check leg placement and overall fit.
If you’d like extra help with sizing and fit adjustments, you can download my free Dog Sweater Fit Planner — it walks you through measurements, customization notes, and planning adjustments before you seam.
Care Notes
Machine washable.
Do not exceed 40°C (104°F) water temperature.
Lay flat to dry for best results.

Hi Cindy! This is one of my older posts, and since it’s still so popular, I’m taking some time to update it. While that’s in progress, the link to the printable PDF is located at the top of the post, right beneath the first image. Thanks so much for your patience!

Hi Shannon,
There is a link to a step-by-step tutorial under the "Assembly" section. The assembly part is the exactly the same for the Dog Sweater with Ruffles pattern. Unfortunately, because this is one of my very first patterns and I was new to blogging - I failed to take step-by-step photos of this particular pattern.
But, I did later when I developed the ruffled dog sweater, so I did add a link in this post to reference the tutorial in that one.
You can find the Ruffled Dog Sweater, including the step-by-step assembly of the back and chest pieces via this link: https://itchinforsomestitchin.com/ruffled-small-dog-sweater-pattern/
