I am so excited to share with you my very first crochet purse. And it’s just in time for one of my favorite holidays, Fourth of July!
It’s sturdy, yet fashionable with a patriotic flare. Plus, it’s super easy to make! It requires only the most basic crochet skills, which makes it great for brand new crochet beginners.

Crocheted in red, white, and blue and adorned with white button stars, this Fourth of July purse will add some fireworks to your wardrobe this year!
You won’t believe how easy this purse comes together. It’s made from only four simple pieces that are easily seamed together to create a classic look.
It’s compact so if you are heading somewhere super crowded this Fourth of July it will be easy to carry, but also roomy enough to hold your small essentials – keys, cell phone, lip gloss, pen, change purse, etc.
I used RedHeart SuperSaver yarn to design this pattern. This is an economical yarn that comes in loads of brilliant and beautiful colors. I actually had the perfect colors for this project right on my yarn shelf!
Another reason I chose this yarn is that it’s sturdy without being bulky. So your purse will have just the right amount of firmness while still maintaining its basic shape once filled.
You can choose to line your purse with fabric or leave it bare. The purse is both beautiful and functional either way.
I chose to line my purse with coordinating Fourth of July fabric from JoAnn’s. I even whipped up a little change purse from the extra fabric to compliment the purse. It took only 10 minutes to do, plus, it’s super cute! Don’t you think?

Body:
Ch 26 with Red
Turn work
Row 1: Sc in the first ch and in each ch across, ch 1, turn
Rows 2-3: Sc across, ch 1, turn
*Change to White
Rows 4-6: Sc across, ch 1, turn
Change to Red
Rows 7-10: Sc across, ch 1, turn*
Repeat from * to * until piece measures approximately 11.5-12 inches long. This is the piece that gets folded in half to create the actual “bag” part of the purse.
You should be alternating white and red throughout.
It doesn’t matter whether you end on red or white as long as you complete three rows of each color.
Change to Blue
*Sc across, ch 1, turn*
Repeat from * to * until blue section measures about 3.5-4 inches. This part forms the “flap” of the purse.
The body of the purse should now measure about 15-16 inches long.
Sides: Make 2
Ch 5 with Blue
Row 1: Work 2sc in second ch from hook, sc in the next 2 ch stitches, 2 sc in the last ch stitch, ch 1, turn work (makes 6 sc)
Row 2: Work 2sc in the first sc, sc in the next 5 sc, 2sc in the last sc, ch1, turn work (makes 9 sc)
Rows 3-23: Sc in each sc across
Row 24: Sc2tog, sc in the next sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn work
Row 25: Sc2tog, sc in the next sc, sc2tog
Bind off & weave in ends.
Strap:
Ch5 with Blue, turn work
Row 1: Sc in the first ch and across, ch 1, turn work
Repeat row 1 until piece measures 30 inches long.
Bind off & weave in ends.
~ You can make the strap longer or shorter to suit your taste, but remember that crochet stretches so eventually your strap will become longer than when you originally created it. For this reason, I tend to crochet my straps a bit shorter than I actually want it.
Assembly:
Now that you have created all the necessary pieces, it’s time to put your crochet Fourth of July purse together!
Step 1
Place the side pieces on the wrong side of the purse body like in the picture below.
Then fold the body of the purse up while aligning the bottom edge & opposite edge of the side pieces with the bottom edge & opposite edge of the body.
See picture below.
This can be a little tricky to do, but it is still quite easy. Just make sure that all edges are aligned and that the top of the edge of the sides is in line with the top edge of your crochet purse.
Step 2
Seam all the edges together using a sewing needle and clear invisible nylon thread.
You can do this using with yarn and a tapestry needle if you like, however, you are sewing together multiple colors. If you use blue yarn, you will see a blue seam on the white and red sections, etc.
As you can see in the above picture, this is how I initially planned to seam the purse together. But, I found it actually best to use clear invisible nylon thread instead.
Step 3
Place about 1 to 1-1/2 inches of the strap ends to the sides. Sew the straps to the sides with a sewing needle and clear invisible nylon thread or coordinating blue thread.
You can sew the straps on the inside or outside of the purse. I chose to sew mine to the inside.
Add Magnetic Snaps:
This crochet Fourth of July purse opens and closes via three magnetic snaps. Space out and sew the bottom half of the snaps along the top edge of the bottom part of the purse. Use either clear invisible nylon thread or coordinating thread. See below.
I actually sewed mine along the very top edge of the upper white stripe instead of the red stripe demonstrated in the picture. This is to provide more give in the purse so I can stuff more in! LOL
Now, if you are not going to add a lining to your purse, sew the top half of the snaps along the upper edge of the top part of the purse as seen in the picture above.
However, if you are going to line your purse, be sure to sew the top half of the magnetic snaps to the fabric before sewing the lining to the crochet bag.
**Make sure that when you close the top part of the purse, the top & bottom halves of the magnetic snaps align and snap together.
Add Buttons:
Sew the star buttons to the front edge of the top part of the purse using white thread.
Optional:
Line your purse with fun Fourth of July fabric and/or sew a cute little change purse to match!
There you have it. Your crochet Fourth of July purse is ready for the fireworks!
Until next time… Happy Crocheting!
